How To Use Butter Powder (+4 tasty recipes)

5 min read time Apr 14, 2022

Description

Adding some rich, creamy butter to any meal or dish will instantly elevate it. However, any butter enthusiast will tell you about the frustrations of its short lifespan. At home, you have to keep it refrigerated to avoid spoilage.

If you're traveling or spending time outdoors, you likely have to take your meals without butter. But what if you're looking for a long-term butter solution? Well, butter powder comes in. What exactly is butter powder, and how should you use it?

What is butter powder?

Regular butter is made of roughly 80% butter, 2-3% milk solids, and the rest is water. To make butter powder, you need to remove the water content. This is mostly done at the industrial level as making it at home can be quite tricky.

Butter powder isn't regular butter stripped of all its water content. Once you remove water from regular butter, you end up with milk solids and butterfat, which is not a powder. If you further isolate the butterfat from the milk solids, you end up with ghee, which tastes like plain unsalted butter.

To preserve the butter flavor, milk solids are added in powder form. It takes a significant amount of powdered milk to turn the butterfat into butter powder. What you end up with is a long-lasting powder form of butter.

How do you make butter from butter powder?

With powdered butter, you now have a delicious, long-lasting, and real type of butter. But, the problem is you can't efficiently use it in its powdery form.

So, how do you reconstitute powdered butter?

The first step to making butter from butter powder is looking at the brand-specific instructions. Different powder butter brands vary in the amounts of various elements used. Following your preferred brand's reconstitution method ensures you end up with the right consistency and end product.

The general butter powder reconstitution method involves adding a few tablespoons of water to the powder. Some brands advise you to add about 3 to 6 tablespoons of water to the butter powder, while others recommend mixing equal parts water and powder butter.

For the best results, you should follow what your brand suggests. However, if you look at most people's experience with powder butter reconstitution, you'll realize the brand instructions may not be the best to follow blindly.

Essentially, the rule of thumb for reconstitution is to do it gradually. Start off with the desired amount of butter powder, and then slowly add water as you monitor the consistency. Once you reach the desired butter consistency, you should take notes for future reference.

One of the advantages of using reconstituted butter powder is you end up with a soft and spreadable butter that is neither too hard nor too runny. This consistency is ideal whether you want to bake with it or spread it.

Is butter powder real butter?

Butter powder has more or less the same components as regular butter, with the main difference being water content. However, the dehydration and reconstitution processes alter the look and feel of powder butter.

Once reconstituted, butter powder has a texture similar to whipped butter. The taste may be different for everyone, and it may change from one brand to another. Most people who use Z Natural Foods rich salted butter powder say it tastes like regular butter with a bit of milk.

You can use high-quality butter powder just like you would regular butter. However, if you're not using the top-quality stuff, you should use it for baking, soups, gravies, and pasta instead of directly consuming it. Fortunately, with Z Natural Foods' rich salted butter powder quality, you can even spread it on toast and not recognize the difference.

What is the shelf life of powdered butter?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, regular butter should last for about three months, whether it's opened or not. Refrigerating regular butter can extend the shelf life for a bit. However, if you've used butter in the past, you've likely experienced it having a shorter lifespan.

You don't need to worry about its shelf life with butter powder, as it can last for years. It is not uncommon to see powdered butter lasting for more than five years. Whether you're looking for a sustainable butter option or like the outdoors and would like to take some butter with you, powdered butter is the way to go.
