What are the healthiest freeze-dried foods?

5 min read time Oct 13, 2021

Description

Almost any type of food can be freeze-dried

Fruits and vegetables are the most common.

If you want to preserve foods for a longer period of time in a way in which spoilage is kept to an absolute minimum, freeze-drying is the best option.

Foods that are typically most commonly freeze-dried are:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Dairy
  • Eggs
  • Seafood
  • Meat
  • Coffee
  • Herbs

Almost any type of food, spice, or beverage can be freeze-dried and stored effectively for several years. During the freeze-drying process, the food can be kept in its whole state or it can be turned into a powder

Lyophilization is the process used to eliminate moisture from foods during the freeze-drying process.

What are the healthiest freeze dried foods?
The healthiest freeze dried foods are whole, real foods that have been frozen to retain their natural nutritional value.  These foods include eggs, seafood, vegetables and dark colored berries such as acai, blueberry, strawberry and raspberries.

How freeze-dried foods stay healthy and nutritious

Foods are placed in temperatures that are just below freezing. A high-pressure vacuum is used to remove the water. The water becomes a vapour that is collected in a condenser. After the water has been removed, the foods are gradually brought back to room temperature where the rest of the moisture is drawn from it.

This process doesn't damage the food's nutritional make-up and, if the food is left in its whole state, can be rehydrated later. Freeze-drying foods do not change their physical structure in any way.

This means freeze dried foods will retain their nutritional value for many years over what other traditional storage methods do.

Are Freeze-Dried Foods Organic?

Not all freeze-dried foods are organic

If you want to find truly organic freeze-dried foods, you will need to look closely at the label. Many companies that freeze-dry their food products use foods grown from local growers, but that doesn't always mean they are organic. While there are many local farmers who grow their foods without a lot of added pesticides or herbicides, it doesn't always mean they are organically grown.

There is a specific process that must be followed for a farm or growing establishment to be labeled “organic”. Producers who strive to maintain the organic label must keep meticulous records of all their farming or growing practices. Many of Z Natural Foods’ products are freeze-dried and many are certified organic and you can search those here.

In order for foods to be grown organically, the land must be pesticide and herbicide-free for seven or more years.

Foods that are labeled organic, must be harvested from land that has earned organic certification. There is a specific process that the land must go through to earn this certification. Once it has passed the standards for certification, the grower can then begin to label their foods as organically grown.

Tests must be performed on a regular basis during the original certification process. The same testing will continue to be performed to maintain the organic certification and allow the producers' products to be labeled as organic.

Is Freeze-Dried Food Bad for You?

Freeze-dried foods are good for you!

Many foods that are chosen to be freeze dried are harvested at the peak of freshness and processed while they still contain the bulk of their nutrients.

In most cases, these foods are processed within just a few hours of being harvested with very little time passing between each phase. The only step between harvest and freeze-drying is for the produce to be cleaned, with dirt and debris being rinsed away before moving on to the final phase.

Z Natural Foods guarantees the highest nutrient content possible in all of its freeze-dried products.

Freeze drying is good for you because it preserves the nutrients
Freeze-drying is one of the safest of all forms of processing. Because the temperature of the produce is not raised, nutrients aren't damaged. Instead, the gradual lowering of the temperatures preserves the physical structure of the produce and doesn't alter or diminish the nutrients it contains.

Even though all of the moisture has been removed, the structure of the nutrients the produce contains remains intact and will continue to be viable for as long as the item is kept in storage.

Depending on the type of food being freeze-dried, it is estimated that foods preserved in this manner can be kept for as long as 30 years or more under the right conditions. This allows you to keep a long-term supply of nutritious food that you can use anytime you need them.

Organic Freeze-Dried Bulk Food

Buying organic freeze-dried food in bulk is often cheaper than buying products in smaller quantities.  While most of our foods can be ordered in bulk or wholesale quantities, here’s an example of some organic freeze dried foods that can be purchased in bulk.

While many foods are used quite often and may only last a short period of time, others may not be used as frequently and may tend to sit in the pantry for long periods of time. Using freeze-dried foods like Z Natural Foods’ Blueberry freeze dried powder or Strawberry freeze dried powders allows you to use products when and where you need them to provide quality meals for your family. You can also choose from many other super fruits as well.

Buying in bulk allows you to buy enough nutritious products sometimes lasting several months, or longer. Also, many of our customers are in the food manufacturing, retail or distribution business and choose to buy bulk for our wholesale pricing structure

For products that are not used as often, you can divide up the bulk package into smaller packages for friends or freeze for longer periods. With every use, you are guaranteed the freshest most wholesome nutrients, without the high cost and short shelf life of fresh organic products.

Organize Freeze-Dried Food Storage Options

You have several storage options with your organic freeze-dried foods.  You can:

  • Store the product in its original packaging simply by placing it in your pantry.
  • You can also divide up the product into smaller amounts, storing each individual portion into airtight containers and placing them in your pantry.
  • If you want to ensure the product remains as fresh as possible, you can store the containers in the freezer.
  •

Putting freeze-dried products in your freezer is the same as if you were putting other foods in your freezer. It simply adds an additional layer of protection. Z Natural Foods products come in resealable packages for your convenience.

When you store any type of food item, you want to make sure that the container you put it in is air-tight and can be sealed successfully each time you open it. Never leave the container open for long periods of time. This allows moisture to make its way back into the package and may encourage spoilage.

If you plan on using a product often, move a portion to a smaller container so that the risk of spoilage is reduced.

Freezing your organic, freeze-dried products is also quite beneficial and will help to minimize spoilage.
