Weight Loss: Is it Fat or Muscle?

4 min read time Sep 17, 2020

Description

I am going to be brutally honest today. We live in a society where so many people are focused on losing weight in order to improve their health that they have caused a bigger problem:

It is called the “skinny-fat syndrome”

You probably won’t find this in many studies or medical journals. Chances are your doctor won’t know about it, but I assure you,  this condition exists. All you need to do is look around and you will see it ‘clear as day’.

The skinny-fat syndrome is where someone quickly loses a bunch of weight -- incorrectly -- and the majority of their loss is lean body mass, muscle tissue.

When I say incorrectly, what I mean is they do way too much cardio, not enough strength training. Then they starve themselves by consuming fake foods that don’t nourish their body. Here’s an example:

You have 2 people in front of you who lost 15 lbs each.

One of them did it in 3 weeks and their body fat went up 3% due to the loss of muscle.

The other did it over a 6-month period and their body fat went down by 3%.

  1. Who do you think will benefit the most and be more adaptable to the external stressors around them?
  2. Do you really believe the number on the scale is the answer or it is about body composition?

Let’s use history as our guide.

Throughout history, the warriors have always been the ones who fought the toughest battles. Why do you think that is? It was because kings needed to send the strongest into battle.

They were the strongest because they carried the most lean muscle tissue which in turn gave them the ability to adapt to the external stressors of battle. You didn’t see skinny men with pot bellies on the battlefield.  Whether is was the brutal weather, or, healing from a battle wound, their build is what gave them the best chances of survival.

They were able to adapt, overcome and in most cases survive

Having survived the battle, they were the ones who had the longest lifespan despite the fact of what they went through. Focusing on a healthy body composition and adequate lean body mass can be one of the most important goals of your life.

Our society is filled with people who need to gain healthy, lean muscle tissue. Is this you? As a competitive powerlifter of 25 years, I know all too well how to gain muscle. And I have helped many people overcome the skinny-fat syndrome.

Build some muscle

Now, I am not suggesting that you need to become a spartan or viking warrior. But I am suggesting, that at least part of your overall wellness plan be dedicated to growing more muscle. After all, the benefits of muscle go way beyond simply being able to lift more boxes.

Muscle will increase your metabolic rate, help you burn fat in your sleep, help you adapt to a host of stressors and even help keep your bones together!  And it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are two simple steps to help you gain lean, healthy muscle that will put you on your way to rewriting your body composition:

  1. First, get your diet right and eat nourishing foods. Plain and simple. If you claim to be eating enough, and are not gaining muscle, then you are clearly not eating enough foods that support lean body tissue.  Start by going here and eating a quality protein of your choice.  Also be sure to eat plenty of dark, leafy greens like the great Apes, who are the strongest in the animal kingdom with the most muscle mass and they only eat leaves. Pounds and pounds of leaves! Go here to review some of our nutrient-rich, organic and raw leaf powders.
  2. Next, you must do some kind of resistance training. You are not going to gain lean muscle tissue by sitting on the couch. You are also not going to gain muscle by having 90% of your activity as cardio. You need to lift things. I don’t care if it is weights, bricks or stones. You need to force your body to work. No matter what your age you can always do some type of strength training. This is the only way to properly build and sustain quality muscle tissue.  Depending upon your goals, two or three days a week is plenty to build muscle. Keep it super simple.

Keep your eye on the goal, and before you know it your body will get stronger and muscles will begin to appear!
