Okay, so with that said, let's get rolling. Today's topic of discussion is going to be the functional food known as spirulina. So, to review a few things, let's start by discussing the idea of green foods in general. Green food supplements or powders are considered to be a modern creation of a food product that combines dried or juiced foods like grass powders, vegetable powders, seaweed powders, and algae powders. The purpose is to provide a concentrated source of nourishment to support human physiology. Green foods are known for their high level of quality nourishment, including micronutrients and phytocompounds like chlorophyll, which gives them their green color. When prepared and utilized correctly, green foods can be an easy and effective way to add high-quality nourishment to your daily diet. Now, let's address the question of whether spirulina is a superfood. To answer this question correctly, we need to understand the definition and characteristics of superfoods and how they compare to functional foods. While there are no specific legal definitions for these terms, functional foods are defined as dietary items that provide nutrients and energy, modulating multiple targeted bodily functions by supporting specific physiological responses. Superfoods, on the other hand, are foods rich in compounds considered beneficial to a person's health, with high nutritional density and low caloric count. While these terms have similarities, there are intrinsic differences that separate them. Therefore, spirulina is considered a functional food rather than a superfood, as functional foods have been intensely researched to understand how unique compounds can support well-being by modulating specific mechanisms of action within the body. Spirulina is an algae that contains a treasure trove of nutrients and nourishment. However, before we delve into its qualities, let's clear up a couple of misconceptions about spirulina. First, while spirulina is technically a source of B12, it contains pseudo-B12, which has similar chemical structures to B12 but cannot be properly utilized by the human body. Second, while spirulina is often touted as a quality source of protein, it is not a complete source of protein as it lacks some non-essential amino acids. Despite these points, spirulina still contains a range of high-quality, nourishing compounds that have the potential to support various aspects of human health. According to a review titled "Nutritional and Therapeutic Potential of Spirulina," spirulina preparations have been shown to influence the immune system by increasing specific activities like macrophage function, stimulating antibody and cytokine production, and increasing the accumulation of natural killer cells in tissues. Spirulina has also exhibited glucose and lipid profile-correcting activity in animals and diabetic patients and antiviral properties against enveloped viruses such as herpes, cytomegalovirus, influenza, and HIV. Additionally, spirulina has been found to inhibit carcinogens, protect tissues, and reduce toxicity in the liver, kidneys, and testicles. It's worth noting that spirulina's ability to grow in hot alkaline environments ensures its hygienic status and makes it one of the cleanest and most natural foods found in its natural environment. Its adaptability to heat also allows it to retain its nutritional value during processing and shelf storage, unlike many other plant foods. Spirulina is also considered a quality source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. The American diet is often rich in pro-inflammatory Omega-6 fatty acids, with the average American consuming as much as 25 times more Omega-6 than Omega-3 fatty acids. Spirulina's fatty acid content can vary depending on the source, but it has been shown to provide GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in significant amounts. GLA is a unique fatty acid that supports a healthy inflammatory response, and EPA and DHA are essential for various aspects of health, including brain function and cardiovascular health. Chlorophyll, the compound that gives plants their deep green color, is another key component of spirulina. Chlorophyll has highly nourishing and protective properties and plays a role in photosynthesis. When ingested, chlorophyll moves throughout the body and helps in the absorption of lipids and fat-soluble nutrients. Spirulina is also rich in carotenoids, a class of pigments produced by plants, algae, and bacteria. Carotenoids have unique attributes and are researched for their potential antioxidant-like qualities. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, spirulina is considered cooling, increases Yin fluids, builds and enriches the blood, tonifies the spleen and kidneys, clears heat, and tonifies Jing (essence). It is believed to be contraindicated for those with cold and damp symptoms like mucus and yeast. In TCM's Five Element Theory, green foods represent springtime and the wood element, which resonates with the liver and gallbladder. The liver is associated with strategic planning and vision, while the gallbladder is associated with wise decision-making and judgment. Spirulina is known for nourishing the liver and gallbladder and supporting detoxification pathways. In conclusion, spirulina is a functional food with a range of nourishing compounds that have the potential to support various aspects of human health. While it may not meet the criteria of a superfood, its unique qualities and benefits make it a valuable addition to a well-rounded diet. Spirulina Powder from Z Natural Foods

I use this product every morning mixed with Chlorella Powder, also supplied by Z Natural Products. Both are organic and, as I see, have high quality and complement each other perfectly when taken together.
